(Bismarck, ND) -- Legal Services North Dakota is asking for more money from the state.

Officials say the agency needs additional workers and pay increases as case numbers increase. The agency provides lawyers for criminal defendants who can't afford to hire their own.

The agency handled over 16-thousand cases during the 2022 fiscal year, which ended in June.

The State Legislature is expected to take up the issue at their upcoming legislative session, which begins January 3rd.
