(Bismarck, ND) -- The company responsible for North Dakota's largest oil spill is facing a hefty criminal fine.
A federal judge imposed a 15-million dollar criminal fine Monday on Summit Midstream Partners. Approximately 29 million gallons of highly concentrated, oil contaminated produced water leaked from a pipeline owned by the company in 2014 and 2015, causing grave environmental damage.
The company has just reached a 36-million dollar settlement with the state of North Dakota and the U.S. Department of Justice. Surface water cleanup is nearly finished, but groundwater cleanup in continuing.
