Hazmat team responds to unknown spill in McKenzie County

(Williston, ND) — The hazardous materials response team fromm the Williston Fire Department and Williams County/Williston Emergency Management responded to an unknown spill Wednesday in McKenzie County.

According to Williston Fire officials, the team was requested to assist McKenzie County Emergency Management and the Watford City/McKenzie County Rural Fire Protection District on McKenzie County Road 10 at just before noon Wednesday. The initial reports were of an unknown substance spilled onto the roadway in the area of 37th Street NW and 125th Avenue NW.

The team responded to provide air monitoring in the area, as well as to sample the product to determine the substance’s hazards. Crews confirmed the substance did not pose an immediate risk to those living around the area.

The highway is open for normal operation, but officials say current weather conditions limited cleanup efforts — which mean the area may still have an odor.
