ND Highway patrol vehicle involved in head-on collision near Bismarck

(Bismarck, ND) -- Authorities say a vehicle traveling the wrong way on US-83 is to blame for a head-on collision in Bismarck.

The crash occurred about when Daylight Savings Time moved the Standard Time from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 10th. The North Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper was parked in the median when he saw a vehicle traveling south in a northbound lane. The trooper activated his emergency lights and entered the roadway. The southbound vehicle then struck the trooper in a head-on crash.

The trooper sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized. The other vehicle's driver and passenger, Steven Kessel from Bismarck and Nathan Lavallie of Mandan, were both hospitalized with unknown injuries. Kessel is charged with DUI, Reckless Endangerment, and Driving with a Suspended License.

The crash remains under investigation.
