Five law enforcement officers expected to survive after being injured in shootout near St. Cloud

(Fargo, ND) -- Benton County Sheriff Minnesota Sheriff Troy Heck provided an update Thursday afternoon on 5 law enforcement officers shot earlier in the morning while serving a search warrant near Glendorado Township, just east of St. Cloud.  

"Because all were working in an undercover capacity I cannot provide their names. But I will tell you the injured officers include three Sherburne County Sheriff's deputies, one sustained a gunshot injury and two were shot in their bullet resistant vests. One Elk River Police Department Investigator was shot, and one Princeton Police Department Investigator was shot. As of right now the two Sherburne County deputies who where shot in their vests were treated and released from the Central Care St. Cloud Hospital. The three other officers were taken to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robinsdale where they continue to be treated for their gunshot injuries. All are expected to survive," said Heck.  

The suspect, is identified as 64-year-old Karl Thomas Holmberg. 

He is being treated at an area hospital. 

Holmberg was taken into custody around 10:30 after exchanging gunfire with officers and deputies, and after a standoff and negotiations. 

The incident began around 7:30, when members of a Drug Task Force arrived at the home to serve a search warrant. 

The Minnesota BCA is now investigating the incident. 

No other details are being provided at this time.
