Attorney General Merrick Garland: Minneapolis Police Department uses excessive force and unlawfully discriminates

(Fargo, ND) -- The Justice Department is laying out systemic problems within the Minneapolis Police Department.

Friday morning, Attorney General Merrick Garland detailed the findings of an investigation prompted by the death of George Floyd.

Garland said the department engages in a pattern or practice of excessive force and unlawfully discriminates against Black and Native American people.

The investigation also found the department routinely violated the rights of people engaging in protected speech.

Garland said he looks forward to working with the city and department to implement reforms.
