(Washington, DC) -- Pending home sales are on the rise for the first time since May.

The National Association of Realtors says contract signings rose two-and-a-half percent in December following six months of declines.

The group's chief economist noted falling mortgage rates as the key factor in the turnaround.

The South and West regions led the way with a rise in pending home sales. The Northeast and Midwest posted declines.
