Coming into the 2022-23 season the University of North Dakota has won three straight Penrose Cups, but that’s not stopping the voting from picking the Fighting Hawks to finish second in the conference this season. The University of Denver Pioneers have been picked to win the NCHC.

Denver received 19 of the 23 first-place votes with UND collecting the remaining four votes. Last season North Dakota and Denver finished as co-regular season champions. The 23 ballots are made up of local media covering each school, including select national media members. The 2021-22 season was the first time the NCHC had co-champions.

North Dakota has won five Penrose Cups in the conference's nine year existence, including 2014-15, 2015-16, 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2022-23. The Fighting Hawks are returning 20 players from last season's team, including First-Team All-NCHC honoree Riese Gaber and NCHC Defensive Defenseman of the Year Ethan Frisch.
