North Dakota tribe one of two tribes suing social media platforms

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  Two Native American tribes have filed suit in California state court against several social media giants.

The Grand Forks Herald says Spirit Lake Nation in Devils Lake and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin are bringing the lawsuit against the companies that own Facebook and Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat and Google and YouTube.

The Chairperson of Spirit Lake Lonna Jackson-Street says Native youth are especially vulnerable to the negative long-term effects from the "intentional, profit-driven design choices made by social media platforms."

The Center for Native American Youth says tribal teen suicide is three-and-a-half times higher than the national average.
