Funding available for tribes closing orphan wells

(Washington, DC)  --  There is help available for tribal communities to apply for their share of grant funding to remediate or reclaim orphaned gas and oil wells.

The Department of the Interior recently announced the financial assistance.

There is 4.7-Billion-dollars to address orphaned wells across the country with 150-million-dollars set aside for tribal communities.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland says the Biden administration is "tackling the issue by working with the tribal leaders who know best how to care for their people."

The orphaned wells create a danger from seeping chemicals, contaminating groundwater and threatening and harming wildlife.
