(Bismarck, ND) -- North Dakota's unemployment rate is up slightly going into 2024, but is also consistent with the same time last year, according to data released by state officials. Despite the increase, it is now the lowest seasonally unemployment rate in the nation.

The North Dakota Labor Market Information Center released unemployment data Monday morning. The data shows the January 2024 non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is at 2.5%, or a total of 10,478 unemployed individuals. This is compared to December 2023, which was at 1.8% unemployment, or 7,203 people. For additional context, the data from January of 2023 shows the state had the same unemployment rate as the same time in 2024, 2.5%, or 10,041 people.

The seasonally adjusted rates showed less variance between the most recent months. The state saw 1.9% unemployment in both January 2024 and December 2023, and 2% in January of 2023. Nationally, this number varied between 3.7% and 3.4% in the same time periods. For context, the last time North Dakota saw similar numbers pre-pandemic was in February of 2017, at 3.7%.

North Dakota's January 2024 Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment rate is the lowest in the nation according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The second closest is South Dakota (2.1%), followed by Maryland (2.3%), Vermont (2.3%), and Nebraska (2.5).
