North Dakota National Guard frees up Missouri River ice floe

(Bismarck, ND)  --  The North Dakota National Guard has answered the call to ice-jam duty.

The Guard started using a mass water delivery system yesterday to break up the leading edge of the ice floe on the Missouri River near Bismarck.

Troops delivered thousands of gallons of river water using two Blackhawk helicopters with huge Bambi Buckets to pour water on the floe to break up the ice.

After about four hours of constant work the ice started to move downriver.
