(Bismarck, ND) -- An enrolled member of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is North Dakota's next executive director of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission.

State officials announced last week that Brad Hawk - who was named deputy director of the commission a year ago - had been tapped to oversee the commission's responsibilities.

“For more than a decade, Brad has demonstrated his ability to work through complex issues to strengthen the ties between the state of North Dakota and the five tribal nations with whom we share geography,” North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum said. “His deep knowledge of the history, challenges and opportunities facing our tribal nations will serve all North Dakotans well as we continue working to strengthen our state-tribal relationships built on understanding and mutual respect, with tribal engagement as one of our five strategic initiatives."

Prior to assuming his leadership role, Hawk reportedly had spent 10 years as executive director of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission.  Prior to embarking on his professional and political career, Hawk earned a master's degree in business administration at Bismarck's University of Mary.
