(Bismarck, ND) -- North Dakota officials are making sure residents are prepared for the deep freeze.

The state Department of Transportation is using Severe Winter Weather Week as a way to warn communities of the months ahead. Drivers are urged to alter their speeds based on the conditions on the roadways, avoid closed roads and be alert. This includes driving safely around and near snowplows, keeping up to date on road information, and more.

People are also encouraged to carry an emergency kit in their cars. This includes a small shovel, blankets, first aid kit and a flashlight.
