(Fargo, ND) -- North Dakota syphilis cases are on the rise.
The state Department of Health and Human Services says around 100 cases have been reported, up ten-percent from 2021.
The first sign of syphilis is a small sore, called a chancre. The sore appears at the spot where the bacteria entered your body. While most people infected with syphilis develop only one chancre, some people develop several of them. The chancre usually develops about three weeks after exposure.
Painless ulcers, sores, discharge from private areas or wart-like growths can also occur. Other secondary symptoms if not treated can include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches and fatigue.
Nearly a quarter of the cases are in Cass County. Syphilis is curable with the correct treatment from a healthcare provider.
