(Bismarck, ND) -- The State Auditor's Office says the Department of Human Services is not conducting follow-ups on children from reported abusive situations.

The report released this week says DHS is not adhering to its own policies of checking on children in the allowed timeframe.

The Auditor's office said in extreme abusive situations such as sexual abuse or risk of death, DHS policy mandates a response time of 24 hours. The audit revealed response times averaging 13 days.

The audit found this is the sixth straight year DHS has failed to uphold their own policies.
