(Bismarck, ND) -- With Earth Day around the corner and the U.S. having experienced $343 billion in damage from natural disasters during 2021, the personal-finance website WalletHub Wednesday released its report on 2022’s Greenest States, and North Dakota is near the bottom.

The Peace Garden State has came in as the fifth least green state in the country. WalletHub compared the 50 states in terms of 25 key metrics that speak to the current health of the environment and residents’ environmental-friendliness. The data set ranges from green buildings per capita to the share of energy consumption from renewable resources.

Here are some of the key metrics where North Dakota stood out:

  • 36th – Soil Quality
  • 31st – LEED-Certified Buildings per Capita
  • 46th – Energy Consumption per Capita
  • 48th – Gasoline Consumption (in Gallons) per Capita
  • 47th – Methane Emissions per Capita

As for out neighbors, Minnesota came in as the seventh most environmentally friendly state, while South Dakota came in ninth best. The most environmentally friendly state from the study is Vermont. The least, West Virginia.
