(Bismarck, ND) -- Governor Doug Burgum is commending two North Dakota National Guard soldiers for their brave actions at the southern border of the United States.

Specialists Luis Alvarado and Gracin Clem were conducting Mobile Surveillance Camera site operations for Customs and Border Protection on March 22nd in Texas when they saw five migrants struggling to swim across the Rio Grande. The two worked together to save all five of the migrants from the water.

Burgum says the soldiers were "performing truly lifesaving work" while they support CBE efforts. Alvarado and Clem have been serving at the southwest border since fall 2021.
