(Bismarck, ND) -- The federal Department of Justice is awarding a one-million dollar grant to the North Dakota Court System to help reduce delays in the processing of criminal cases.

Many cases have dragged through the North Dakota system in the last two years, held up by issues such as COVID-related shutdowns and a lack of adequate legal professionals in rural areas. The three-year project will study how issues like poverty, mental health, and geography impact the time it takes to resolve a case.

It will also look into the lack of legal services available in rural areas and the influence of race.
