Jury Deliberates Pendleton Trial

(Grand Forks, ND)  --  The lawyer for a man charged with killing his mother and a Grand Forks police officer says his client was not in his right mind on the day of the shootout.  Defense Attorney Steven Mottinger told a jury during his closing arguments yesterday that Salamah Pendleton was experiencing "extreme emotional disturbance" when he shot at officers who had come to serve him with eviction papers.  Mottinger also claimed Pendleton believed officers had killed his mother. Prosecutors says Pendleton's accounting does not align with what the body camera or physical evidence shows. Carmell Mattison told jurors during her close that officers had not yet placed weapons in their hands when Pendleton opened fire, and there's no shells nor blood to show responders fired at Pendleton while he was inside his bedroom.  Jurors deliberated for four hours before being dismissed and are set to return today. Grand Forks Police Officer Cody Holte died from the gunfire.
