(WDAY Radio) -- A bug species is so loud that some South Carolina residents are calling police.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office sent out a social media post on Tuesday saying the loud whining sounds of Cicadas is causing many to reach out to authorities. The noisiest cicadas have been found in the county, about 40 mile northwest of Columbia. The loud bugs are especially blaring this year due to a 13 and 17-year brood cycle that lined up in 2024 to hatch at the same time.

When the cicadas sing together, they can be as loud as jet engines.
