House GOP picks Minnesota Congressman Tom Emmer for speaker candidate

(Washington, DC)  --  Minnesota Congressman Tom Emmer is the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.

Emmer beat out six other candidates during five rounds of voting behind closed doors today.

He's the third lawmaker to be nominated as the chamber enters its third week without a leader.

Emmer, who is currently the House whip, must now secure 217 of the 221 Republican votes on the House floor to win the Speaker's gavel.

A vote could happen as early as today.
