No majority vote in US House speakership, vote headed to second ballot

(Washington, DC) – The battle for the speakership in the United States House is underway.

After the first vote, no candidate has won the speakership.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) received 200 votes, while Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) received 212 votes.

A majority vote was needed to win the election. Jeffries received just under 49 percent of the vote.

Former House Speaker candidate Steve Scalise received seven votes, while former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy received six votes.
