Kentucky governor declines committing to GOP appointment if McConnell steps down

(Frankfort, KY)  --  The governor of Kentucky is not saying if he'll follow a state law that allows Republicans to choose a replacement for Senator Mitch McConnell if he leaves Congress early.

Governor Andy Beshear was asked earlier this week about making the appointment, only saying that there isn't a vacancy as of now.

McConnell's health has been under the microscope recently after the 81-year-old Senate Minority Leader appeared to freeze up during a pair of press conferences the past couple months.

The longest-serving party leader in Senate history, McConnell said in July he plans to complete his six-year term that he won in 2020.
