(Tel Aviv) -- Scientists say plants make noise when they're hurt or stressed.
Researchers at Israel's Tel Aviv University said thirsty or stressed plants emit popping sounds that are undetectable to the human ear.
The scientists used special microphones to record ultrasonic sounds produced by tomato and tobacco plants. They found that plants that are not stressed typically emitted less than one sound per hour, while plants that were dehydrated or injured produced dozens of sounds every hour.
The study was published Thursday in the journal Cell.
