(Washington, DC) -- Attorney General Merrick Garland is appointing a special counsel to oversee the investigation into President Biden's handling of classified documents from his tenure as Vice President.

Robert Hur is taking on the role after serving as Maryland's U.S. attorney during the Trump Administration.

The announcement comes after Biden's private attorneys found the materials with classified markings, which date back to the Obama administration, at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, DC and in storage at his Delaware home.

Attorneys said in both cases they turned over the materials to the National Archives once they were discovered.
