(Seoul) -- The U.S. and South Korea are going to resume live field training during joint military drills for the first time in years.

The annual summertime exercises begin next month. South Korea's defense ministry said Friday the drills will include combined air carrier strike group training and amphibious operations.

The drills had been scaled back the past few years because of COVID-19 and efforts to lower tensions with North Korea.

The new round of training will be aimed at increasing deterrence against the North and its growing nuclear and missile programs.
