(Medellin) -- Three children are dead in Colombia after a landslide buried an elementary school.

Officials say the landslide hit Thursday in a rural area of northwest Colombia, and that 20 preschool and first-grade children were in the school with two adults and when the mountainside collapsed on them.

Most of the children escaped unharmed, but three died and two are being hospitalized in stable condition.

The landslide was caused by heavy rains that have been soaking much of Colombia because of the La Niña weather pattern.
