(Honolulu, HI) -- A team of researchers is trying to see what lies two miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.
The Nautilus Expedition Vessel left Honolulu for a 26-day trip earlier this week. The crew is heading to the unincorporated U.S. territory of Johnston Atoll. It'll examine the seafloor and possibly find undiscovered species or rocks that existed during the dinosaur age.
Some of the areas they're going to check out have never been seen by human eyes before, let alone explored and studied. Remote operated vehicles will be deployed to look 12-thousand feet below the surface of the ocean.
Johnston Atoll is about 800 miles southwest of Hawaii.
