(Kabul) -- At least nearly a thousand people are reported dead after an earthquake rocked eastern Afghanistan.

Officials say about 950 are dead and over 600 are injured after a magnitude six-point-one earthquake struck early Wednesday near the Pakistani border. Images on local media show houses destroyed and dead bodies covered in blankets.

An interior ministry official says helicopters are being used to reach the injured with food and medical supplies.
