(Moscow) -- America's ambassador to Russia is telling the Kremlin not to close the U.S. embassy.

Ambassador John J. Sullivan told Russia's state news agency TASS that Washington and Moscow shouldn't simply break off diplomatic relations over Russia's attack on Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has cast his invasion of Ukraine as a turning point in Russian history and the country's stance toward the U.S. Putin says America has humiliated Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991.

There hasn't been a break in diplomatic relations between Washington and Moscow since the U.S. established ties with the Soviet Union in 1933.
