(Fargo, ND) -- Guns have overtaken car accidents as the top cause of traumatic deaths in the U.S.

A new study published Tuesday by the British Media Journal says firearm deaths edged out motor vehicle fatalities starting in 2017, a trend that continued in 2018, the most recent year for which data is available. The study found suicides accounted for most of the firearm deaths.

The researchers conclude that access to guns in the U.S. has equated to "magnitudes of death" due to suicides "in the same individuals demanding access."
