(New York, NY) -- A new report out today says wildfires worldwide are only going to get worse.

That report by the UN Environment Program predicts the number of extreme wildfire events will increase 14-percent by the year 2030, and 30-percent by 2050. It concludes that even with the most ambitious efforts to fight climate change, the near-term consequences cannot be avoided.

A head researcher at the UN said, "Uncontrollable and devastating wildfires are becoming an expected part of the seasonal calendars in many parts of the world." In places where wildfires have not historically occurred, they may become more common.
