(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Supreme Court will consider challenges to affirmative action admissions policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.

Justices have generally upheld affirmative action in recent years, but the high court now has a 6-3 conservative majority. Affirmative action involves hiring practices aimed at achieving racial balances and preventing discrimination.

It's unlikely the court will hear this case during the current term. It will likely be placed on the docket for the next term that starts in October.
