(Tallahassee, FL) -- A move is underway to give Florida an official crustacean.
Tampa Bay state Senator Janet Cruz filed a bill that would declare the blue crab as the official state crustacean. The blue crab industry is one of the top five most valuable fisheries in Florida.
Cruz's bill also links the blue crab to Tampa's immigration and labor history. She says deviled crab helped many in Tampa survive a 1920 cigar workers' strike.
