21-year-old Minnesota college student regrets gender reassignment decision; interested in family

(Fargo, ND) -- A 21-year-old Minnesota college student says she regrets undergoing gender reassignment surgery 5 years ago and is now detransitioning. 

"I wasn't happy and it got to the point where I was like, is this really what I want for my life? I realized that hey maybe I want a family you know, maybe this just doesn't fit into what I have grown up and realized I wanted," said Luka Hein.  

After being sexually abused as a child, Hein says she didn't feel comfortable with her body, prompting her to undergo a sex change. 

She tells WDAY News First after looking back on her choice, she felt pressured by her therapist to follow through on the procedure and contends her parents weren't fully informed about the process and weren't made aware of counseling options. 

Hein says she is sharing her story now to help fully inform others who are considering gender reassignment.
