(Grand Forks, ND) -- Are any federal government agencies reviewing the Fufeng Group's proposed corn milling project for the City of Grand Forks? Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski answered "not specifically" when questioned on the matter. However, he said the project could be stopped if concerns are raised.
"You know the moment we would hear any red flags from any federal apparatus we certainly would take a step back all the way up to killing the project," said Bochenski.
WDAY News First asked Bochenski about federal review after the city council this week voted to approve the development agreement with the China-based company. Fufeng Group could perform initial construction work on the project as early as June. However, some citizens, along with security expert Ross Kennedy are raising concerns about the plant being used as a base for China to spy on operations at the nearby U.S. Air Force base in Grand Forks.
Bochenski touted potential economic benefits of the project, saying if constructed it would generate more than $5 million in tax revenues for the city over a 20 year period.
