(Fargo, ND) -- The Freedom Fishing Foundation is using the popular pastime to help veterans heal.

"It started with two Army buddies, Jim and Eric were in a Humvee together in Iraq and they were blown up.  They drove over and IED and they both suffered severe injuries," said Ben Elfelt the president of the non-profit, while talking about the veterans who started the foundation.

The foundation was started in Circle Pines, Minnesota in 2018 by veterans who all experienced emotional trauma or serious physical injuries while serving in the battlefield.  They plan and host free fishing trips for veterans and their families.

Elfelt says fishing simply provides an environment where veterans can relax and eventually connect with others who are experiencing similar emotional or physical difficulties.  To learn more, us the link to reach their website.
