(Jamestown, ND) -- UPDATE:  WDAY Radio News spoke with Mayor Heinrich late Monday morning.  He says he believes the allegation against him is coming from a woman who approached him at the bar, who he says initiated an argumentative conversation with him about taxes.  Heinrich says the conversation came to an end after he told the woman "the conversation is over", and at that point the mayor says the woman walked away.  Heinrich also says the allegation is false and is aimed at derailing his reelection campaign.  He has served as mayor of Jamestown since 2018.

INITIAL REPORT:

Jamestown Mayor Dwaine Heinrich is vehemently denying sexual assault allegations being lodged against him by a woman he supposedly encountered at a local bar.

Heinrich says he believes the allegation is an attempt at retaliation for an action by the city council. He says he will continue to research his ability to take legal action against the "individuals responsible for this."

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating the case.
