Ethan Broad Sentenced to Over 30 Years in Prison for the Murder of Dystynee Avery

(Moorhead, MN) -- We now know how long Ethan Broad will be behind bars for the murder of Dystynee Avery.

The 28-year-old will spend 30 1/2 years in jail, after accepting a plea deal earlier in the case.

Clay County Judge Tammy Merkins announcing the sentencing Friday morning via zoom, with family of Avery and both the prosecution and defense present.

Broad had been found guilty of killing Avery at their 28th Avenue South Apartment, dismembering her body, then placing her remains in a nearby dumpster.

"This was a horrific, senseless crime," said Merkins during the sentencing. "There is nothing that I saw or do that can change what has occurred, hopefully this hearing today can provide some sort of closure to Ms. Avery's family and loved ones."

Broad had tried to revoke his initial guilty plea earlier this year, but was denied. He had also attempted to claim he was mentally unfit to accept a plea, but had been deemed capable multiple times by physicians.
