Sanford Health, Intermountain Healthcare suspend merger discussions

Sanford Health and Intermountain Healthcare have announced an indefinite suspension of conversations about a planned merger, according to a Sanford Health news release.

The decision, announced this afternoon, follows the recent departure of longtime Sanford president and CEO, Kelby Krabbenhoft. The health system's board of trustees last week appointed Bill Gassen as the organization's new president and CEO.

According to Sanford, given the leadership change, the health system has "decided to pause current merger and acquisition activity while they address other organizational needs."

Intermountain Healthcare's president and CEO Marc Harrison says the system is "disappointed but understand the recent leadership change at Sanford Health has influenced their priorities."

Intermountain Healthcare and Sanford Health announced on October 26 that a letter of intent to develop a strategic partnership had been signed.
