UPDATE: NCAA cancels D-II, D-III fall championships; D-I decision still looms

UPDATE: The NCAA Division I's President Council has not made their decision on the fate of the fall 2020 championships. A decision is required by August 21.

ORIGINAL STORY: The NCAA Division II and III Presidents Councils have announced the cancellation of the fall 2020 championships.

The moves come after yesterday's announcement that the NCAA Board of Governors would defer the decisions regarding the cancellation of fall championships to each individual division. The Board of Governors also directed each division to meet various requirements to compete in the fall. Those directives include that all member institutions apply the resocialization principles to fall sports and set a 50% sponsorship threshold for a fall sport championship to be conducted, among other requirements.

Both Division II and Division III officials say the decisions were made "due to the operational, logistical and financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic."

WZFG Radio spoke to Valley News Live sports director Beth Hoole, who says an announcement on the fate of the Division I fall championships could still come today.
