UPDATE: Two dead, including one police officer, in Wednesday afternoon shooting in Grand Forks

8:52PM UPDATE: A Grand Forks Police officer has died as a result of a shooting this afternoon in the City of Grand Forks.

The officer died of gunfire injuries.

At approximately 2:27 p.m., deputies with the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve eviction-related paperwork upon Salamah Q. Pendleton, 41-year-old resident of 2627 South 17th Street #303.  During the service attempt, Pendleton initiated gunfire against the deputies.  The deputies called for emergency assistance, and officers from multiple agencies, including the Grand Forks Police Department, responded.

During the incident that ensued, two GFSO deputies, two GFPD officers, Pendleton, and a female, were all in the apartment.  During the course of the incident, Pendleton received gunfire injuries, was transported, and is being treated at Altru.  The female occupant received fatal gunfire injuries.  One GFSO deputy received non-life-threatening gunfire injuries, and is in stable condition at Altru.

Names of involved individuals will be released tomorrow, to permit full family notifications.

4:45PM UPDATE: Grand Forks Police Lieutenant Derik Zimmel says the scene is stable at a shooting in the City of Grand Forks, but the investigation is active.

There has been reported one fatality, a female, Zimmel says. The suspect, a male, was injured by gunfire. Two officers, one from the Grand Forks Police Department and one from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, were injured. Zimmel says there are no details regarding the conditions of those injured. No details are available as to what led to the shooting, which occurred just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation will take over the investigation of the shooting. Zimmel says normal procedure is to have an outside agency, not involved in the incident, take over the investigation when law enforcement is involved. Being both city and county officers were involved, Zimmel says the BCI will take over a portion of the investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: Grand Forks Police are on the scene of a reported shooting in the city of Grand Forks.

According to Lieutenant Derik Zimmel, the incident happened just before 2:30 p.m. at an apartment building, located on the 2000 block of South 17th Street in Grand Forks.

Details are limited at this time, but Zimmel says three people have been transported to Altru Hospital for gunshot injuries. Two of the three transported are law enforcement officers. Zimmel says one is a Grand Forks Police officer, while the other is a deputy with the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office.

Zimmel advises residents to avoid the area at this time.
