Source water spill reported in Williams County

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) has been notified of a source water spill at a groundwater extraction facility in Williams County. The facility is operated by Hess Corporation.

The incident occurred about 8 miles southeast of Ray on March 24, and it was reported the next day. The cause was equipment failure due to a damaged gasket.

Source water is used for enhanced oil recovery. It is higher in dissolved solids and minerals than fresh water; however, it is much lower in chlorides than produced water.

Hess Corporation estimates indicate approximately 377 barrels of source water were released and impacted agricultural lands.

Personnel from the NDDEQ are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
