South Dakota second, North Dakota fourth in 2019 National Drunk Driving Report

BackgroundChecks.org released its National Drunk Driving Report for 2019, ranking each state according to the number of drunk driving incidents and deaths occurring per year. Despite the ongoing, numerous incidents caused by drunk driving, the report noted significant decreases in some of the most troubled states.

Nevertheless, there is a gulf of difference from one state to another: while some have reduced drunk driving incidents, others have worsened.

States with Worst DUI Problems

  1. Wyoming
  2. South Dakota
  3. Montana
  4. North Dakota
  5. Mississippi

The full report includes analyses of all data, including arrests and deaths per population, along with visual representations of the data (e.g., heat map of the U.S.).

Overall findings coincide with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) reports, which indicate that the percentage of motor vehicle fatalities is currently at its lowest since the inception of such recordings (1982). Nevertheless, drunk driving claims thousands of lives every year and deserves every collective effort possible to continue the reduction of incidents.

The National Drunk Driving Report was created using the latest FBI arrest figures for incidents involving alcohol-impaired driving, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics for motor vehicle fatalities, and U.S. Census data (results were calculated per 100,000 population of each state).
